Relational Practice

I work with people and groups where relationship underpins the personal, complex, and systemic.

I support individuals, leaders, organisations, and groups to navigate challenging situations whilst maintaining connection to themselves, each other and the process of their shared work.

If this chimes, drop me a line.

Who We Work With

Our focus is on doing what matters, together

I continue to work with a range of clients, both internationally and locally in the UK and Ireland. The range is deliberately diverse, as the world is constructed of many unique parts, all of whom must be related to in order for a complete, common-sense way forward to be trusted. The range of clients enables me to be always in relationship with diverse parts of the systems in which I live and work, and therefor bring the process of making a shared sense of possible futures, to life. These are the kinds of circumstances and clients I have recently worked with. If you'd like to hear more about past clients and what we did together, write to me and ask.

Complex & emergent

Civic, cultural & community. Organisational, Operational and Strategic. Restorative, relational and Iterative. Confidential, Sensitive and Discreet. All combining to form the web of my way-of-working.

Groups and systems

Multi-stakeholder settings; open public processes & community assemblies; one-2-one leadership work and work with teams; local and national coalitions, and partnerships requiring targeted interventions or long term support.

Constructive conflict

Pressure, stuckness, challenging conversation, anti-discrimination, peace building and conflict transformation. Mediating complex disputes and rebuilding trust, with oneself, with each other and with-and-between the systems we are part of.

Learning, reflecting, acting

Reflection, sensemaking, writing, and working with knowledge, to support people and organisations to learn, share and make wise decisions based on that which they are learning and sensing together.

I am a radical generalist within the highly specific field of working with human beings, organisations and systems.

I specialise in working with complexity rather than trying to simplify prematurely. I thrive where people, relationships, decisions, histories, organisations, and futures are all present, welcomed and included in the dynamics and the future thinking. I love to do this work in a way which respects tradition, heritage, history and also empowers people to be the architects of their emerging culture and future path.

As complex pieces of work rarely arrive with a clean label such as coaching, mediation, facilitation, organisational development - I begin with deep listening to meet the client where they are and discern the way forward together. Whilst precedent exists from previous relationships and work, every new engagement is a nuanced design, arrived at after listening deeply and designing with the client around their needs. I work in supportive and augmentative ways when structures and systems are already working - enhancing best practice with tools, systems, and ways of working to bring people together and make wise decisions in complex moments. I also work in gnarly, discomforting and discreet circumstances, for example where leadership needs direct and discreet support through coaching, mentoring and side by side planning. I work with teams where culture and dynamics are evolving and support helps the evolution follow a constructive trajectory. Everything begins with a conversation and I would appreciate hearing more about your context, without any pressure, payment or imperative. Drop me a line.

From this foundation of deep listening, the best and nuanced combination of skills (and often bringing in other team members to support) is built: sometimes a structured conversation, sometimes a longer piece of facilitation, sometimes individual coaching alongside group work, sometimes longer group and organisational change processes. The map on the next page shows the strands. In practice, they're most often used interwoven with each other, in various combinations, throughout our time working together.

Some ways to engage together

Three ways to connect and develop our conversation: the practice map shows some of the strands of my work, from time to time, my writing is shared as an invitation to have a deeper conversation with me and maybe we can develop how we think together, and if you simply want to get in touch for a chat, a written conversation over email is usually the first way to invite a conversation and explore how working together can help.

writing

An invitation to connect our thinking

Often, disciplines that get treated as separate — coaching, mediation, facilitation, organisational development — are capacities best served mixed, held together by relationship. I'm interested in exploring how this intermingling of capacities works, both practically, ethically, operationally, systemically and relationally - and whilst the writing can be academic and a bit intellectual, the real place we will experience and feel what it's like to be in relationship around complex topics and work together in complex ways is through working on a project together.

Invitation

I'd love to hear what you're thinking.

I want to hear from you in this moment, with what you are curious about. What's happening?

What do you know or not know, that has sparked this thought, or what feels at stake — wherever you are at, is where I want to start.
